Following BaFin’s policy paper, the European insurance supervisory authority Eiopa has also published guidelines for dealing with artificial intelligence (AI).
AI applications help to process customer inquiries and claims more quickly. But insurers must ensure fairness and freedom from discrimination. A group of experts for digital ethics has therefore formulated six central principles and wants to help the industry to use the technology more responsibly. You should
- check proportionality,
- pay attention to fairness and equal treatment of their customers,
- ensure transparency and explainability,
- establish human supervision of the IT applications used,
- handle data storage responsibly, and
- pay attention to the resilience of the systems.
These are non-binding and explanatory recommendations for action.
